#weridecapeepic
offers hobby mountain bikers a unique platform to ride the world’s most prestigious MTB race, the Cape Epic, while generating awareness and donations for charity projects.
In 2022, the team raised an impressive €68,000 for partner organisations.
In March 2025, #weridecapeepic will go into its next edition.
We are six, passionate bikers from Bavaria, Hesse and South Africa. We take part in the world’s toughest and most beautiful mountain bike stage race in South Africa.
In doing so, we support education and health projects and collect donations.

PROJECTS WE SUPPORT
POPUP gives young people in South Africa an individual and professional future. Their education programme enables a generation marked by poverty and a lack of prospects to take on self-responsibility and become positive role models in their community.
The ILoveBoobies Charity aims to provide education and clinical screening for South African women with limited access to medical services. The organisation provides free breast screening for financially disadvantaged women and promotes public education and support.
100 % of every donation will go to the supported organisation and won‘t be used to finance our project costs.
The JAG Foundation is in its 15th year of creating sustainable change in high-risk communities in South Africa. Utilising sport and play as educational tools to impart life skills and offer children in these communities an alternative lifepath to gangsterism, drugs, and abuse. Our value-based play programmes, target children’s degraded belief system of themselves, their community, their lives, and future.

Our private costs for realising this project are ~16.000 €.
We are authorised to issue donation receipts for donations in accordance with § 10b EStG.

TEAM GER1
Gregor
Gregor Enns (45) is happily married to Lena and blessed beyond measure as a father of five children. Besides his job as a civil servant in the customs administration, he is a passionate photographer. In his free time, he finds compensation in mountain biking and road cycling to escape the stressful everyday life.
Eugen
Eugen Klassen (46) is happily married to Erika and the proud father of two teenagers. As a project manager in the pharmaceutical industry, he finds his perfect balance to the hectic working world by biking in nature.

Markus
Markus Weninger (42) is married to Nicole and they have four children together. He studied theology and religious philosophy and now works as a pastor. Markus enjoys nature and the combination of effort and fun when cycling.
Peter
Peter Thiessen (37) is the father of three children and married to Luise. He is enthusiastic about technology and works as a development engineer in mechanical engineering. Cycling on both a racing bike and a mountain bike has been his balance to everyday life for many years.

Sahann
Sahann van der Vyver (38) is married to Nikki and has one son. He is busy with a degree in Theology and works as a junior pastor in Hartbeespoort. He is also the Head of MI at an Insurance company. When Sahann rides his bike he enjoys being in the outdoors and the combination of physical intensity and fun clears your mind and soul.
Who I am is only by grace, what I have is only borrowed.
SJ Swart
SJ Swart (38) is married to Chrisna and has three kids. SJ is an owner of a tyre shop in Pretoria. Riding his bike in the outdoors is the perfect escape from the huzz and buzz in the city.
Time in the outdoors opens my mind to breath.
Nothing cleans the soul like being in nature with my Creator.

Mario
Marketing / Foto / Video
Mario is a police officer and a passionate photographer and videographer. Due to his experience gained over the years, he is a very important support for this project.
Support on Site
We recruit local volunteers for logistical support on the ground, who support POPUP for years. They are not only practical angels but also irreplaceable links to the local South African community.
The team is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.
Success stories
#weridecapeepic went to the start for the first time in 2022 with a different team composition.
Markus & Eugen reached the finish after 657 km and 17250 metres of altitude.
With this campaign, they were able to collect a total of ~68000 € in donations for POPUP and other educational projects in Africa.
